Contraindications & Precautions
Alfalfa is generally used as a food-like nutritive herb, but it isn't appropriate for everyone.
Alfalfa naturally contains vitamin K, so individuals taking warfarin (Coumadin) or other vitamin-K-sensitive anticoagulant therapy should speak with their healthcare professional before using alfalfa regularly and should keep vitamin K intake consistent.
Alfalfa may influence blood sugar. Those taking medication for diabetes or blood-sugar management should consult their healthcare professional before regular use.
Because alfalfa contains naturally occurring phytoestrogenic compounds, consult a healthcare professional before medicinal use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with hormone-sensitive conditions.
Alfalfa has also been associated with lupus-like effects in susceptible individuals, particularly with concentrated alfalfa seed products or supplements containing L-canavanine. Individuals with lupus or another autoimmune condition should consult their healthcare professional before medicinal use.
Keep out of reach of children.
A Little Apothecary Lore 🌿
Alfalfa's history stretches back thousands of years. Its name is often traced through Arabic and Persian agricultural traditions, where the plant became prized as an exceptionally nourishing crop.
In modern folk-magic traditions, alfalfa has become associated with prosperity, abundance, protection from scarcity, and keeping the home provided for.
That makes this humble green herb rather perfect for The Black Cat Apothecary: nourishment for the body on one side of its history, abundance for the home on the other. 🐈⬛🌿
