Ashwagandha Root, Organic

Withania somnifera

Certified Organic • Cut & Sifted • Origin: India

Ashwagandha is one of the most recognized herbs in traditional Ayurvedic herbalism and is commonly classified as an adaptogen.

Adaptogenic herbs are traditionally used to help support the body during periods of physical, mental, and emotional stress. Ashwagandha is especially valued for its ability to support overall balance and resilience while helping the body respond more effectively to everyday stressors.

Why We Keep It on Our Shelves

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb used traditionally to help support and balance body systems.

We keep Ashwagandha on our shelves because it is one of our favorite herbs for helping the body respond to stress while supporting overall balance, resilience, and wellbeing.

Rather than being thought of as an herb for just one body system, adaptogens are traditionally used to support the body as a whole — especially during demanding or stressful periods.

Traditional Uses

Ashwagandha has traditionally been used to support:

  • A healthy response to everyday stress
  • Overall balance and resilience
  • Relaxation and nervous-system support
  • Restful sleep
  • Physical and mental stamina
  • General vitality and wellbeing

How to Use Ashwagandha Root

Because Ashwagandha is a root, it is best prepared as a decoction rather than simply steeped like a delicate tea.

For a decoction: Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of cut-and-sifted root to 8–12 ounces of water. Bring to a gentle boil, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for approximately 15–20 minutes. Strain before drinking.

Ashwagandha has an earthy, slightly bitter flavor and blends beautifully with warming herbs and spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, or chai-style blends.

Traditional milk preparation: A prepared Ashwagandha decoction can also be combined with warm milk or a milk alternative and sweetened to taste.

In herbal blends: Ashwagandha can be combined with other roots and herbs in custom tea or decoction blends. When combining roots with delicate leaves or flowers, simmer the roots first and add the more delicate herbs near the end.

It may also be used as a raw botanical ingredient for properly formulated tinctures and other herbal preparations.
