Organic Agrimony Herb

Agrimonia eupatoria

Agrimony is a traditional European herb with a long history of use as a gentle astringent. Its naturally occurring tannins are part of what gives the herb its characteristic drying and toning qualities.

Traditional herbal use has centered particularly around the digestive tract, mouth and throat, and skin. The European Medicines Agency recognizes agrimony's long-standing traditional use for mild digestive complaints, as a gargle for minor mouth and throat irritation, and externally for minor skin irritation and superficial wounds.

Why We Keep It on Our Shelves

We keep Agrimony on our shelves because it is a wonderfully versatile astringent herb traditionally used when the body needs gentle toning and support.

It has a long history of use for supporting the digestive system and soothing tissues of the mouth and throat, while also having traditional external uses for the skin.

For an apothecary, Agrimony is one of those herbs that may not get as much attention as some of the better-known botanicals, but its versatility makes it a valuable herb to have available.

Traditional Uses

Agrimony has traditionally been used to support:

  • Digestive comfort
  • Normal bowel function during occasional loose stools
  • Toning and soothing of tissues
  • Mouth and throat comfort
  • Minor skin irritation when prepared for external use
  • General gastrointestinal wellness

These uses are based primarily on long-standing traditional herbal use rather than strong modern clinical evidence.

How to Use Agrimony

Because this is the cut-and-sifted aerial herb, Agrimony can be prepared as an herbal infusion.

Herbal Tea / Infusion

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of Agrimony herb to 8 ounces of boiling water.

Cover and steep for approximately 10–15 minutes, then strain.

Agrimony has a mildly bitter, earthy flavor and can be enjoyed alone or blended with complementary herbs.

The European herbal monograph describes traditional tea preparations using approximately 1.5–4 grams of the herb in up to 250 mL of boiling water.

As an Herbal Gargle

Agrimony tea has also traditionally been cooled and used as a gargle for minor mouth and throat discomfort.

Prepare an infusion, allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature, strain thoroughly, and use as a gargle. Do not swallow large quantities when preparing specifically for gargling.

External Herbal Wash

A stronger Agrimony infusion may traditionally be used externally as an herbal wash or compress for minor skin irritation.

Allow the infusion to cool completely before applying externally. Do not use on deep, infected, or serious wounds.
