About Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is a North American woodland perennial with a long history of traditional herbal use. While the plant produces tall, striking flowering stalks, it is the underground root and rhizome that are used medicinally.

Today, black cohosh is perhaps best known as an herb associated with women's wellness and the menopausal transition, particularly for supporting comfort through changes such as occasional hot flashes and other symptoms associated with menopause.

Its strong traditional identity and very specific herbal applications make black cohosh an herb that is generally used intentionally rather than simply as an everyday nutritive herb.

Why We Keep It on Our Shelves

We keep Black Cohosh on our shelves primarily for its traditional role in women's reproductive and menopausal wellness.

It is one of the herbs we reach for when formulating around the changing needs of the female body, particularly during perimenopause and menopause. Black cohosh has also traditionally been used for menstrual comfort and musculoskeletal complaints.

Because this is a more targeted botanical, we encourage customers to learn about the herb and its precautions before incorporating it into a wellness routine.

How to Use

Because your black cohosh is cut & sifted root, it can be prepared as a decoction rather than a simple tea infusion.

Add the herb to water, bring to a gentle simmer, and allow the tougher root material to simmer before straining.

Black cohosh may also be used in herbal formulations or for making tincture preparations.

Because black cohosh is a relatively potent botanical rather than an everyday beverage herb, I would not put a casual tablespoon-per-cup dosage on the retail page. Use should be individualized according to the preparation and professional guidance.

Flavor Profile

Bitter · Earthy

Black cohosh has a distinctly bitter, earthy and somewhat woody/root-like flavor. This is definitely more medicinal-herbal than "curl up with a delicious cup of tea." 😂

Safety & Contraindications

Black cohosh is not appropriate for everyone.

Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically directed by a qualified healthcare professional. People who are breastfeeding, have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions, or take medications should consult an appropriate healthcare professional before use.

Rare reports of serious liver injury have occurred in people using products labeled as black cohosh, although causality has not always been clear. Discontinue use and seek medical advice if symptoms suggestive of liver problems develop, such as dark urine, jaundice, unusual fatigue, or persistent abdominal pain.

Black cohosh should not be used as a substitute for evaluation of unexplained vaginal bleeding or other new reproductive symptoms.
