Star anise is an unmistakably beautiful and aromatic spice with a warm, sweet, licorice-like flavor. Traditionally used in herbal preparations to support healthy digestion and respiratory comfort, star anise is also a wonderful addition to warming teas and seasonal blends.
Its naturally strong fragrance makes it useful beyond the teacup, too. Whole stars can be incorporated into simmer pots, potpourri, sachets, and other aromatic preparations.
Why We Keep It on Our Shelves Star anise has traditionally been used during the cold-weather months for respiratory comfort, digestive support, and relaxation. We also simply love its aroma—placing several whole stars in a small dish creates a naturally warm, spicy fragrance.
How to Use For tea, gently crush 1–2 whole stars and steep in approximately 8 oz of hot water for 10–15 minutes. Strain before drinking. Star anise can also be added to herbal tea blends, chai, culinary recipes, simmer pots, and aromatic preparations.
Safety: Use in normal culinary amounts. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medications, or medical conditions warrant checking with a qualified healthcare professional before using concentrated or medicinal amounts. Use only authenticated Chinese star anise (Illicium verum); Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) is toxic and should not be consumed.
